Overview

This tour is no doubt for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. A 7-day journey brings you to see Sepilok Orang-Utan Sanctuary, known worldwide for its exceptional work with its dense protected rainforest; the Sun Bear Conservation Centre; the Kinabatangan River, the second longest river in Malaysia with a length of 560km from its headwaters in the mountains of southwest Sabah to its outlet at the Sulu Sea, east of Sandakan; the Abai indigenous tribe; and the Sukau Village.

Day 1Sanadkan - Sepilok
Upon arrival at Sandakan Airport, you will be greeted by our driver who will transfer you to My Nature Resort. Whilst not being the closest property to the orang-utan sanctuary, it boasts the best facilities in the area and is within walking distance of the Rainforest Discovery Centre. Balance of the day is at leisure. During leisure time, you can enjoy the resort facility or choose to visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre located within the walking to the nearby Kabili Sepilok Forest Reserve. This tropical gardens contain a staggering amount of flora, boasting more then 250 species of native orchids, slipper orchids, pitcher-plants, arid land plants, aquatic plants, and some of the most spectacular tropical American plants, such as the bromeliads and the Venus flytrap, Take to the 147m steel canopy walk which sits 28 meters above the ground and offers visitors fantastic views of the Sepilok Rainforest and the chance to spot the resident Bornean Bristlehead, of the rarest birds in Sabah. The Rainforest Discovery Centre opens daily from 08:00 hrs-17:00 hrs, a small admission fee is payable locally.

Day 2Sepilok
After breakfast transfer to Sepilok Orang-Utan Sanctuary in time for the morning feeding session. Sepilok is known across the world for its exceptional work. The reserve covers over 40 sq km of lush, dense, protected rainforest, and exists for the rehabilitation of orphaned and injured orang-utans. After visiting the Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary, continue your visit to the Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Sun bears are the smallest and least known members of the bear species and their population is rapidly diminishing throughout South-East Asia. The center is the only one of its kind in the world and this visit will give you an insight into the great work that is taking place here. The dedicated team strives to rescue captured bears and promote sun bear conservation in Borneo through animal welfare, conservation, rehabilitation, research and education. Admission times to the orang-utan sanctuary are 08:00 hrs-11:00 hrs and 14:00 hrs-16:00 hrs. The Sun bear Conservation Centre is open daily from 09:00 hrs-15:30 hrs.

Day 3Sepilok - Sukau (Kinabatangan River)
After breakfast, relax and get ready for your trip to Kinabatangan River. You will make the short drive to Sim Sim Jetty for a scheduled boat that departs at 12:00 hrs to Abai Jungle Lodge. This boat excursion along the coast and into the mouth of Kinabatangan River. Having checked in to Abai Jungle Lodge, which provides modest but comfortable accommodation by the river, relax or take a walk through the village. In recent months there have been a number of wild orang-utans spotted close to the lodge so it’s advisable to keep your eyes peeled at all times. Throughout your stay in the Kinabatangan region you will pass amongst pristine mangrove forest in search of a diverse range of wildlife including proboscis monkeys, a wide array of bird life and various reptiles. The river and these forests provide a vital natural habitat for many of Borneo’s endangered species including pygmy elephants and orang-utan. You will have your lunch at the lodge and check in Abai Jungle Lodge. Late in the afternoon, you will be expecting a cruise to search for wildlife until the sunsets and by night falls continue the night cruise to witness the fireflies as Christmas tree. Dinner will be served at Jetty facing Kinabatangan River. After dinner, experience the “Jungle at night” at our nature boardwalk to search for birds, snakes, insects and other wildlife with the nature guide.

Day 4Sukau (Kinabatangan River)
Make an early morning boat trip to Pitas Lake to spot some of the river’s colorful (and noisy) birdlife waking up, and view wildlife foraging for breakfast along the riverbanks. Return to the lodge for your own breakfast. After breakfast, you are invited to join our CAP Tree Planting Project and Abai Village Walk with the locals and enjoy a simple lunch arranged by the villages at Abai Village OR at Abai Jungle Restaurant. In the later afternoon, go for another river cruise in search of wildlife.

Day 5Sukau (Kinabatangan River)
Enjoy your breakfast at Abai Jungle Platform. Check out and boat cruising up stream to Sukau in search of primates especially the Endemic Proboscis Monkeys, birds and other wildlife. Arrive Sukau, check in at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. Having settled into your lodge, your afternoon is at leisure to relax. Spend the early evening on the waterways of the Kinabatangan River and the Menanggul River, spotting wildlife with your specialist guide. Return to the lodge as darkness falls to enjoy an evening at the waterside terrace.

Day 6Sukau (Kinabatangan River)
Make an early morning boat trip to Oxbow Lake to spot some of the river’s colorful (and noisy) birdlife waking up, and view wildlife foraging for breakfast along the riverbanks. Return to the lodge for your own breakfast. Your afternoon is free at leisure to relax. Spend the early evening on the waterways of the Kinabatangan River, spotting wildlife with your specialist guide. Return to the lodge as darkness falls to enjoy an evening at the waterside terrace.
